Snowmageddon Detroit 2011

Dubbed Snowmageddon 2011 by various media sources, the snow fall on Februaury 1st, 2011 was much less than predicted for Detroit.  Still, snowfalls reached one to two feet in some areas, paralyzing Chicago and Grand Rapids.  Motorists were trapped, vehicles abandoned, the Michigan legislator meetings cancelled, and Detroit businesses were closed.

Below are some random pictures from the Midwest Snowmageddon 2011, and a video from Chicago, Illinois, four hours from Detroit, Michigan.  The video and pictures show the massive snow drifts, abandoned vehicles, and monster waves on the Great Lakes.  It is interesting, to say the least.

Campus Martius Park was a mess, as was Downtown Detroit.  Many offices, schools, and government centers were closed.  It was recommended that all non essential utility or safety personnel stay home, to allow the snow to be removed as quickly as possible.  My family and I stayed in side, thankful we have a warm shelter to go home to.

To see the conditions in Downtown Detroit, check out the live Campus Martius Park webcam.  To see the driving conditions on Metro Detroit's motorways, check out the Michgian Department of Transportation live webcams.

The above photos remind me of this scene from a popular horror movie, or maybe a History Channel Life After People episode, only with snow.
